Obituary for Norma Riley

Norma Riley
Norma Riley was the fifth child and first daughter born to Viola Matthews on August 31, 1958 in Juan Diaz ,Panama. Growing up she was called “sissy” by her grandmother, siblings and friends.

Norma attended elementary and middle school in Panama. At seventeen years of age, she came to the United States and finished her education at John Bowne High School in Flushing, Queens. In the early 80’s, she became a tax preparer for David Jackson Tax Office until the early 90’s. By 1998, she was heavily involved in the PTA at P.S 104 working with Yolanda Eaddy. Norma was actively involved within the Department of Education from being an after school teacher in David Dinkins after school program to becoming a School Lunch Aide Helper in 2009. Shortly after, it was not long until she was promoted to Head Cook.

Norma always said education is the Key to success and the children are the future. She loved seeing children succeed and doing well in their academic years. Her hobbies included, traveling, cooking, listening to the sounds of Marvin Gaye, Anita Baker and attending church or listening to Joel Osteen. Norma was energetic, down to earth, funny and most of all uplifting.

She adored her three children: Steven, Tyata and Kyata. She also cherished her siblings Barbara Matthews, George Matthews, Antonio Riley, Jorge Grant, Alberto Smith, Alferdo Jamieson and Eduardo Riley as well as nieces and nephews.
