Obituary for Andrew E Barnwell

Andrew Eusie Barnwell
28th December 1968 – 26th April 2021
Son of
Rev. Rena Hartley-Barnwell &The Late William Oswald Barnwell
Our loving brother Andrew Eusie Barnwell was born in Georgetown, Guyana on 28th December 1968. He was the first baby born in the new development of South Ruimveldt Gardens.

Andrew attended several Primary Schools since his mother, Rena Hartley-Barnwell, was a school teacher who transferred to several schools and wherever she went the “Posse” of her children, nieces and nephews followed. The last Primary School Andrew attended was “Ascension Lutheran”. He passed Common Entrance and was admitted to Bishop High School. He was in the first group of boys to attend the previously all-girls school. At Bishops, Andrew became the beloved little brother to his seniors. His sojourn at Bishop High school did not please his Mom and after a few years she removed him to St George’s School where she was the Principal.

After leaving school the fun loving and easily bored Andrew worked at several vocations. His uncle, the late Evroy Babb got him into Guyana Police Training school but the strict discipline clashed with his free spirit. His brother, Lancelot (Rocky) Hartley got him an apprenticeship at Guyana National Engineering Corporation as he was proficient in mechanics. His first day he was given the broom to clean the workshop, this did not sit well with him. As in truly Andy’s style he approached Managing Director ( the late Ken Barrow) to discuss the pro and cons of his version of a machinic apprentice. The Director was so impressed he asked Andrew what job he wanted. Andrew replied, “I can be your driver”. He was given that job on the spot. A few months later, while on the Company’s wharf, another Director was complaining that the guys were not there to offload a USA cargo ship, Andrew volunteered climbed into the crane cab and cleared the entire deck of containers in a few hours. He was offered the position as crane operator, but eventually found it very lonesome and isolated in the sky, he had to be interacting with people and of course he loved driving so it was back with Ken driving again.

Andrew migrated to USA, in 1991 and worked at Toyota as a service mechanic. He did several other jobs over the years but his last was as a Nurse Aide/Transporter at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. His working days were spent caring for others. He was also very involved with his motorcycle club and would spend weekends in Queens riding with them. In his free moments you would still find him fixing a car engine or changing oil; nothing under the hood of vehicle was new to him.

Andrew leaves to mourn a blended family, on one hand his mother the Rev. Rena Hartley-Barnwell, brothers Vernon, Lancelot, Stephen Hartley and Worth Barnwell and sister Dawna Hartley. On the other hand, Sisters Joy, Jackie and Penny Barnwell, brothers Carlton, Carl and Terrance Barnwell. Andrew will be missed by his uncle Rev. Clifton Elias, Aunt Eunice the patriarchs of the Elias family, several nieces and nephews, dozens of cousins and many friends in USA and Guyana.

He has gone to meet his father William Oswald Barnwell and sisters Joy and June Barnwell who awaits him at Heaven Gate.

May his soul rest in Peace
